A homicide produces the most severe biological contamination of any biohazard scenario. The volume of blood, the force of the injuries, and the number of affected surfaces create a remediation challenge that demands precision at every step.
Once the Tulsa Police Department, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, or the local sheriff’s office releases the scene, what remains is the property owner’s responsibility.

Violent death involves massive blood loss. The average adult body contains approximately 1.2 gallons of blood. A gunshot wound, stabbing, or blunt force trauma that results in death can release a significant portion of that volume across the scene, onto floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, and into structural cavities.
Blood follows gravity and capillary action simultaneously. It pools on floors, soaks through carpet and padding into subflooring, runs along wall-floor junctions behind baseboards, and wicks upward into drywall. Gunshot wounds produce high-velocity spatter that embeds blood and tissue into textured ceiling surfaces, light fixtures, HVAC vents, and the interior faces of window frames.
This contamination carries bloodborne pathogens, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Hepatitis B remains viable on dried surfaces for up to seven days.

We do not begin work until we have confirmed scene release with the investigating agency. In Tulsa County, this means clearance from the Tulsa Police Department’s homicide unit. In Broken Arrow, the BAPD. In Creek County cases involving Sapulpa or Sand Springs, the Creek County Sheriff’s Office. In Rogers County near Catoosa, the Rogers County Sheriff.
In cases involving ongoing investigation, we can deploy preliminary containment, sealing affected areas with polyethylene sheeting and deploying HEPA air scrubbers, to prevent contamination spread while preserving the scene for additional evidence collection.
Homicide scenes frequently involve contamination in areas not immediately visible. Blood travels through walls via electrical conduit pathways. High-velocity spatter reaches inside HVAC ductwork through supply and return vents. Bodily fluids migrate under baseboards and through subfloor seams into rooms below.
We inspect every surface within and adjacent to the primary scene. Presumptive blood detection identifies contamination that has migrated beyond visible boundaries.
Contaminated carpet, padding, and subflooring sections are removed. Affected drywall, often involving multiple walls and the ceiling, is cut out to the nearest stud beyond the contamination boundary. Blood-saturated insulation is extracted. In severe cases, structural members are treated with enzymatic cleaners and sealed with antimicrobial encapsulant.
Every remaining surface receives EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant. ATP bioluminescence testing verifies decontamination.
Homicide remediation often requires significant structural repair after contaminated materials are removed. We document all removed materials and coordinate with contractors for restoration work, or provide detailed documentation for the property owner to arrange repairs.
The Oklahoma Crime Victims Compensation Program provides financial assistance to victims of violent crime and their families, including reimbursement for scene cleanup costs. Claims are filed through the Oklahoma District Attorneys Council.
The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Victim Witness Center provides support services to crime victims and their families.
Property owners, particularly landlords, should be aware that Oklahoma law may require disclosure of a homicide to prospective tenants. Consult with a real estate attorney regarding your specific disclosure obligations.
